Start with Framer for a visual marketing or portfolio brief. Start with Webflow when reusable styles and structured CMS publishing justify a more involved workflow. Webflow documents scoped static export; Framer’s official portability pages currently conflict. Verify the exact publishing and exit requirements.

Start from the website, not the AI label
Both Framer and Webflow offer AI-assisted website workflows. The first generated homepage is a draft, while the ongoing job is refining layout, publishing content and maintaining the site.
Our first-trial recommendation is Framer for a visual portfolio or marketing brief, and Webflow for a site where reusable styles and structured content are central. This is editorial judgment from documentation, not a measured design-quality or speed comparison.
Neither recommendation depends on Webflow App Gen. Its help center says further development has paused and deprecation is planned. This comparison covers the website workflow.
Try your content model before committing
A portfolio with a handful of projects and a marketing site with repeated case studies can have different editing requirements. Create the structure you expect to maintain, not only a homepage.
| Trial task | What it reveals |
|---|---|
| Publish two case studies from one content model | Whether the repeated structure fits your material |
| Replace a short title with the longest real title | Whether the layout handles realistic content |
| Let the future editor add a third entry | Whether the owner can maintain the site |
| Change a page URL | Whether you have a redirect and link-update plan |
| Complete the actual form or contact action | Whether the business goal works after publishing |
Ask the owner to do the third content entry without help from the original designer. Note any missing permissions or confusing steps. A workflow the future editor cannot operate is a poor fit even if the first design looks convincing.
Visual editing and reusable structure
Framer documents a visual canvas and CMS features. It is a relevant trial for layout-led marketing work and a portfolio whose owner wants to refine the published site visually.
Webflow’s AI site builder documents a generated draft and design system that can be refined in its website editor. It moves higher on our shortlist when repeatable content and reusable styles justify time spent learning and maintaining the structure.
We do not claim one produces better-looking output or is universally easier. Use real images and copy, then compare the next edit on desktop and a narrow screen.
Understand the plan structure
Check the hosting and editing capabilities your project requires. Webflow’s paid Site plan for connecting a custom domain is different from its paid Workspace entitlement for code export. Do not assume buying one establishes access to the other.
For either platform, record the CMS volume, editor needs, domain requirements and billing term. Use the official pricing page to check the current offer and renewal basis.
If collaboration is part of the brief, try the exact roles the owner and designer will use. Compare the budget with the running-cost worksheet.
Webflow export has functional exclusions
Webflow documents HTML, CSS, JavaScript and asset export on paid Workspace plans. That can be useful for a static hosting requirement.
The exported code does not preserve the complete CMS, ecommerce, forms processing, search or code-component behavior. If those features are part of your brief, identify what will replace them. Test the form on the proposed host rather than judging its appearance.
Separate content backups from the deployed site package. A collection CSV is not a working content-management system.
Framer portability remains a verification task
Two Framer help pages checked for this comparison give different descriptions. The native HTML-export policy states there is no supported standalone HTML export for self-hosting. The data-portability guide describes downloading published output and moving it.
We link both sources in the profile and keep that support unresolved. If independent hosting is mandatory, ask for a supported demonstration before paying. Do not turn a third-party plugin claim into an established native capability.
For a source-oriented application rather than a visually maintained site, compare the builders with code export.
Which one should you trial?
Try Framer first when a visual portfolio or focused marketing site is the main job and managed publishing is acceptable.
Try Webflow first when the design system and structured CMS are central enough to justify the workflow and plan requirements.
Try both with a homepage, two repeatable entries and the actual contact action. Decide after the next content update, narrow-screen check and review of publishing terms.
Which is better for SEO? Check the actual published pages and the ongoing content workflow. Platform features do not prove search rankings. Use the SEO checklist.
Which should an agency use? Try the client handoff, permissions and future edits. The client’s maintenance needs can change the choice.
Can I fully self-host either? Webflow’s export is scoped and excludes managed functionality. Framer’s support remains unresolved in this edition. Verify the required workflow rather than relying on the word “export.”
