An order exception console
Connect an approved read-only order resource first, then add a narrowly scoped correction action. Require confirmation and an approved function for a write.
Generate React-based internal apps connected to approved business resources. Retool combines AI building with publishing controls; the apps depend on its platform runtime and configured services.
Shortlist Retool for internal software connected to existing business resources when access and publishing approvals matter. Confirm current new-builder limitations early; a source-control integration does not remove its runtime dependency.
Retool’s current AI app builder uses natural language to create React-based applications connected to organisational resources and functions. An administrator configures the builder, and publishing includes a review of function approvals. This is a useful distinction for a team that already has databases and APIs: building an operational interface also needs a process for approving what it may do to those systems.
The new builder must be evaluated separately from Retool’s classic app editor. Current publishing documentation lists authenticated access and explicitly says exporting new apps for use outside Retool is not supported. Local code and source-control workflows are therefore development controls around a Retool application, not proof of an independent runtime. Check the exact builder, deployment edition and user types when evaluating a customer-facing or externally shared use case.
Suggested briefs to evaluate the workflow, based on documented capabilities.

Join existing records into a review queue and let assigned staff resolve exceptions. Separate the people who use the app from those allowed to publish changes.
Have the administrator set up the model and the database/API access available to the builder.
Describe the exact users, records and permitted actions rather than asking for an unrestricted admin dashboard.
Inspect generated functions, resource permissions and the publish checklist before a write reaches production.
Use authorised builder access or the eligible source-control flow, then verify the live app with an ordinary internal user.
Each fact includes its scope and a link to the official documentation.
The current quickstart documents a prompt-built application made of components, connected resources and functions, configured by an administrator.
ScopeThe new app builder, distinguished from classic Retool apps.
Retool offers cloud and self-hosted deployment by edition. New apps require publishing and authenticated access; current builder-specific restrictions must be checked.
ScopeDo not transfer classic public/embedded app entitlements to the new builder without verification.
The CLI supports local editing and protected source-control workflows. The publishing guide currently says exported apps for use outside Retool are unsupported.
ScopeSource control and classic Toolscript/JSON migration are not independent new-app runtime export.
Budget separately for builders and internal or external users, AI credits, workflows and the edition required for source control or self-hosting.
ScopePlan and new-builder capability scopes must both be checked.
Create an order-review app where an analyst can inspect exceptions but only an authorised manager can submit a correction.
This is a suggested evaluation task, not a test result. SiteKeen has not completed hands-on testing of Retool. Our recommendation combines official documentation with editorial judgment. How we review →
